Angola: advances in renewable energy production

Since 2015, Angola's installed renewable energy capacity has increased from 2,000 MW to 6,400 MW, according to the Secretary of State for Energy, Arlindo Carlos, at the 15th IRENA Assembly in Abu Dhabi. This increase has made it possible to reduce more than 12 million tonnes of COz and optimise the operating costs of national electricity production.

Angola plans to reach 9,000 MW of solar capacity by 2027, with a share of renewable sources of over 70 per cent. Large projects, such as the Saurimo, Luena and Caraculo solar parks, are already helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and diversify the country's energy matrix.

These efforts are part of the government's strategy to promote the energy transition and strengthen sustainable electricity production, with a view to meeting national and regional needs in Southern and Central Africa.
